Gina wakes up to a massacre

Gina Casavin wakes up one morning in a trance, covered in blood. Her lover Tyler lies dead on the vanity in the bathroom, with his back slashed several times. The rooms are littered with champagne, prescription pills, and Tyler’s blood. The house maid Miranda Dean knocks on the door and warns Gina that “Nicholas” will be coming home soon and that Tyler needs to be leaving. Gina snaps out of her trance, and upon seeing the blood, begins panicking. She screams “I Killed him” as Miranda rushes in and sees the mess. Gina blames it on a curse.

The police are called to the Casavin Estate, but are puzzled due to the lack of evidence. Miranda explains to Leuitenant Wright that her room is on the other side of the mansion, and unfortunately did not hear any intruders. A criminal psychiatrist named Dr Jeffrey Webster enters and immediately takes notice of the young and beautiful Gina. Lt Wright brings him to Tyler’s body where they determine he was choked to death, slammed onto the vanity, then stabbed several times with a dagger. Gina insists that she did it and must be taken away, but the policemen find it unlikely due to her small size. Jeffrey spots the pills and believes Gina may be suffering for a mental paranoia brought on by drugs, but she disagrees and insists that anybody who loves her gets killed by “the blood in her veins”.

Act II[]

Nicholas Casavin, Gina’s playboy cousin who has “half the town in his pocket”, arrives from work. It quickly becomes clear Nicholas didn’t approve of Gina and Tyler’s relationship. Wright becomes frustrated with the lack of answers he receives from the Casavin’s and leaves, but demands Jeffrey get some information out of Gina. Jeffrey shares his belief about Gina’s psychosis with Nicholas, who in response threatens him not to meddle with their family business.

Jeffrey ignores Nicholas and spends the next few days meeting Gina at her house for private therapy sessions, which turns into a friendship. She specifically has him meet her in the gardens outside and other places where Nicholas won’t find them. Eventually Nicholas learns about this from Miranda; she insists it’s been helpful for Gina, but Nicholas shuts her down and sends her off to help the other “servants”. Nicholas reiterates to Gina that Jeffrey can never be her friend and asks if she has revealed any of their family history to him.

Eventually Nicholas and Gina tell Jeffrey the story behind their family curse. Hundreds of years ago, their great-great-grandfather Anton had an opportunity to marry into a wealthy Corsican family; however, he needed to get a divorce from his first wife, a gypsy woman named Mirabel. She became violent, and Anton ended up stabbing her to death with a dagger. She cursed him with his last breath, telling him his children “and the children of their children.....” will destroy the ones they love until the Casavin family name “disappears from the Earth forever.” Gina admits the curse has caused her to kill two lovers, and that her relationship with Tyler lasted as long as it did because Nicholas fed her pills to keep her “passion less”. Nicholas reveals — while gently stroking his cousin’s cheek — that they are the last of the Casavin’s and there is no way to break the curse.

After Nicholas leaves to attend a party downstairs, Jeffrey tells Gina he doesn’t believe a word of it. Despite Gina’s insistence the curse is real, Jeffrey tries convincing her Nicholas is messing with her head and that she’s stronger than she thinks. Miranda eavesdrops on them then walks in before the two almost kiss. She tells Gina to join the party, then privately thanks Jeffrey for everything he’s done. She encourages him to continue getting closer to Gina, then admits that Nicholas worries her. She tells Jeffrey she might know something about Tyler’s murder, then gives him an address to meet at. After Jeffrey leaves, Miranda goes to Gina’s bedroom and pulls a dagger out of a secret compartment in the wall.

Nicholas Casavin

Miranda meets Jeffrey later and reveals Nicholas had sour business with Tyler, who was a Wall Street executive. Nicholas owed him $200000 and never made an effort to pay him back, but Tyler arranged to cancel the debt when he became involved with Gina. She accuses Nicholas of being jealous of his cousin, and says that he threatened Tyler two days ago by claiming “You will die if you are ever alone with my cousin again.” A shocked Jeffrey convinces her to tell this to the police.

Back at the Casavin Estate, Nicholas creepily proposes to Gina. He plots for them to go back to Corsica, where it is legal for cousins to marry. Gina says no, as neither are in love with each other. Nicholas stresses that the curse won’t be able to take their lives this way, saying they were made for each other. Gina, who is starting to believe Jeffrey’s words, refuses to go along with Nicholas’s idea. A furious Nicholas forces himself on Gina, but Jeffrey and the police barge in to arrest him for Tyler’s death. Before being hauled away by Lt. Wright, Nicholas tells Gina not to forget who she is and warns, “Don’t let yourself be alone with him.”

Once the police leave, Jeffrey shares his belief that Nicholas used the story of the curse to control Gina and as a scapegoat for the murders. He insists Gina’s safe now, but she still worries about the mysterious deaths of her lovers; Jeffrey urges her to “trust again”. Miranda walks in with wine and repeats Jeffrey’s claims that she is safe now. She leaves the two lovers alone to drink and have passionate sex.

Turns out the curse is real

Later that night, Gina turns into a terrifying demon and grabs the dagger. She tries to kill Jeffrey, but he wakes up and fends her off. At that moment, Nicholas returns home and hears the commotion; Gina attacks him instead, lifting him off his feet and breaking his neck. She throws Nicholas’s corpse to the ground then charges Jeffrey once more. He grabs the knife and stabs her in the stomach, which ends up being fatal. Her body slowly turns back to normal as Jeffrey weeps “It wasn’t her. It was some thing.” Miranda enters and reveals it was the curse. She chastises Jeffrey for his disbelief in it, then relishes in the fact that the Casavin family name has finally ended. She reveals herself to be the great-great granddaughter of Mirabel, and that her family has finally been avenged.
